5 Themes of Geography

People move, people move
From location to location
All around the earth
Yea, from nation to nation
GPS, an absolute destination
Or relative, 4 blocks north of that old gas station
People get to a place - a unique congregation
Of absolute points
Like your home or train station
The place means much more than a dot on the floor
That’s only longitude and latitude
We’re so much more
Chorus:
We want to move to unlikely regions
Yea, once harsh locations
Like Las Vegas or Dubai
Those places? Why?
…are changed by human environmental interaction
Yea, they develop the landscape
Allowing humans there to thrive
So, grab the rivers and block the sky
People move, people move
Away from difficult regions
Like deserts and tundra
That have difficult seasons
They move to easier areas for practical reasons
Like grasslands, where food can grow and be eaten
People define
Areas with similar glitches
Based upon their common common characteristics
But I move to regions, yea for all you cynics
That are difficult, at best
For less practical reasons
What makes you move?
Just tell me why
How do you move, and should I try?
What route would I take?
And if you move, I’ll say goodbye
I’ll be changing this place in time
I’ll build a road, a house
And over there, my water supply

My students and I love the new 5 themes song. We have a question for you though. In the song are you saying “bottle it up”, “pile it up” or “ba-da-da-duh”? We have a discussion going and are anxious to know who has it correct.
Thanks for your help and wonderful songs!

Good morning Ms. Howard and class!
Thank you so much for the compliment of writing and expressing your enjoyment of the song…I am thrilled that you are finding it useful!
Interesting question that you ask….
While I was recording the song, I actually did not intend to keep that track that you are referring to, as it was a little strange sounding. However, after hearing it a bunch of times, I decided to keep it in there - it ended up sounding fine with the rest of the music. My original intention was was to sing “ba-da-dee-dup” but it sounded so much like “bottle it up” that I ended up just going with “bottle it up.”
The lyric “bottle it up” fits in with the content of the song as well, as manufacturing processes like bottling are another way of sustaining life in harsh regions. Manufacturing and delivering goods from one part of the world to another (or one region to another) make it possible to live almost anywhere, in any region, and still have the ability to survive. Even in places like the middle of the amazon river basin…food could be manufactured (canned, bottled, freeze-dried, etc) somewhere else and delivered to you…giving the ability to thrive virtually anywhere. HEI is amazing.
Thanks for writing! Have a fantastic long holiday weekend!
