Verse 1:
In Interphase G1 the cell is growing
Then in S the chromosomes replicate, twist up and shorten
So the 46 pairs of sister chromatids are here
Some say attached at the hip, I say attached at the centromere
Uh oh, in G2 the cell prepares for the show
Chorus:
We’ve got 46 chromosomes, now 46 pairs
Yea that’s enough right there for two diploid cells
Prepared in interphase, now there’s no place to hide
Oh hey mitosis, maybe we will divide
Verse 2:
The nuclear membrane it dissolves in a bath
Of all that jelly cytoplasm on the prophase lap
Now the chromosomes are free to float wherever they please
But on the metaphase plate they plant their metaphase feet
Oh no, it’s given spindle fibers time to grow
Bridge:
In anaphase the cell stretches adding cytoplasm
While the protein-heavy spindle fibers - get up and at ‘em
They reach out and pull the sister pairs apart
You 46 to the left, you 46 to the dark
Verse 3:
A new nuclear membrane forms around each set
Of the 46 chromosomes, wound tight and thick
We call it telophase, when the middle gets pinched
And the cytokinesis applies that cytoplasm wrench
Uh oh, two identical 2n cells in tow
